Whenever a dog gets medication of any type, stay with it for the next several hours regardless of whether the pet has had that medication before.

This rule was unknown to me until a couple hours ago when a friend's dog had an allergic reaction to her annual shots, which she'd previously gotten with no problem.

Had it not been for the dog's owner's quick thinking and the help of the emergency vet, it would have been a very sad evening.

Please pass this along, it could save the life of a dog and the heart of its owner.

Everyone else seems to do it, so to start off my post, I thought I would share: This is a picture of my baby when he was, well, a baby. : ) I confess I've always been a fan of big dogs, but when my S.O.'s cousin purchased Rabs I slowly fell in love with him. Now that my S.O. and I own him, I can't be any happier!

Introduction aside, I have two huge concerns I'd like to bring up and ask about. First is Rabs's flea problem. My S.O. and I live in central Florida and that's caused problems because our front door has such a large space between it and the floor, letting in all manner of bugs - including the dreaded flea. I keep thinking we've gotten a good hold on the problem (shampoo, spray, collars, etc) but each time the fleas come back, and worse than before. I can't seem to clean them off completely, let alone keep them away. Are there any brands that are better than most for Maltese, with their thin skin? I don't want to hurt him by constantly bathing him in these horrid, medicated soaps. : (

The second came about because of the first. I know Maltese have very delicate skin and dry out easily, but one can one do when said pup's skin gets flaked? I confess I don't much like seeking big-named websites for advice, as they often suggest brand name lotions, etc, that can be harmful to my baby. Anything you all as owners could suggest?

Hey all!

I posted in many communities awhile ago asking if anybody would be interested in joining a community for all toy dogs. I realized that certain dogs, like my English Toy Spaniel, don't have their 'own' communities since they're pretty rare. The response was great so I went ahead and made one.

This community is for owners or lovers of any toy breed. Mixed breeds are more than welcome, too. I thought it'd be really nice to have a place where all toy dog owners can get together to talk about their doggies and all the things that come along with owning them.

Mods, if this isn't allowed, just let me know and I'll delete it!

Please join us at toydogs

This is widely X-posted. Sorry if you see it a few times!

OMG, I've died and gone to LJ heaven- this community rocks.

I don't have a Maltese (sniff, sniff no dogs allowed in apartment buildings where I live), but my sister does have one. Her name is Sophie and she is cutest over one year old I know!

Please do "friend" me.

Cheers,

Urbanchickdc

Hi everybody!

I just joined, and I feel really bad for posting what might be considered spam-ish, but I have a question.

I belong to lots of groups related to dogs, but one of my pups who is pretty left out is my almost nine year old English Toy Spaniel, Bogart. He's mentioned a lot, but he can't be featured much like my other dog (without me feeling like I might be bothering people, since the groups aren't ETS-specific).

Charlies are a fairly obscure breed, so I'm sure that if I made a group just for them, it wouldn't get too active! But in doing some interest searches I've realized that there isn't a group for all owners of toy breeds (or little guys in general). Admirers (but not owners) of toy breeds would be more than welcome to join, and I feel it'd be fine for people to chat about their non-toys, too. It'd be a real friendly, relaxed place for stories, advice, and of course - pictures!

But before going ahead and making one, I thought I'd get some opinions first. Would you want a group like this? Do you think you'd join?

If you have any input, questions, whatever - please share!

Hi, my name's Michelle and I recently got a maltese as a surprise gift and I'm so grateful, she's such a bundle of joy, I love her so much. My longtime boyfriend, Jeremiah, and I named her Roxy- well... I basically named her, haha. But wow, what a difference she's made... I've been pretty depressed for a long while, even prescribed medicine for it, and she's done what medicine never came close to doing- maltese are simply wonderful. :)

Am I the only one who is TOTALLY sick of people telling them that they treat their dog like an accessory because they like to put a pink bow in her hair or bring her with them for a trip to wal-mart? I don't even have my maltese yet (two more months!!) and I'm fed up with it already!

Important message from the mod. [24 Jan 2006|11:30am]

The West Jersey Animal Shelter is closing at the end of this month. The Pennsauken, NJ shelter had it's license revoked due to unkept and dangerous conditions for the animals. There are currently 31 dogs and 5 cats on the premises that are in desperate need of adoption. If these animals are not adopted by the end of the month, they will be euthanized.

The West Jersey Animal Shelter is open for adoptions Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Phone (856) 486-2180.

Even if you can't adopt an animal, please repost this.. .Eventually it will reach someone who can.. Even if only one pet is adopted, that's still a big difference for that animal's life.

Hi there! I'm the future owner of a Maltese puppy. We are looking for one born sometime in February so we can take her home by the end of April.

I live in Florida. I can't seem to find an affordable breeder in the area and I wanted to know if any of you have any recommendations for me.

Thanks!

Stones... and Age [29 Dec 2005|05:23pm]

munchkin1616
2 things....

1. Any experiences with stones in the bladder? My maltese at my mother's is 13 and just had surgery for stones, they found 7. I guess he's doing alright, but the docs are keeping him overnight again and analyzing the stones.

2. How old are your malteses? At 13, the vet says he's a "young 13," but I just wonder how old a maltese can really get.

Thanks!

Happy Holidays to all. This is my first post and I wanted to share a picture of my 4 year old Maltese Looey. He was a rescue from the pound and came with separation anxiety and hearing problems, but we couldn't love him more! Here is his Christmas card from his first Christmas with us.
